Thursday, August 6, 2009
One tree bought and payed for
Local Dominican Rhett DeFrietas felling a white cedar tree near Gallion ( southern end of the island )
Using wooden wedges to hold the tree apart while cutting it into 1 - 3 ft lengths for carving

Rough chainsaw cut bowl (25 in across )...... 1 hrs work
will be left to dry out then finished
to be continued............
The mobile carving unit........ nice and cool in the shade by a river 2 mins from home....
more of the White cedar
First mark the edge of the bowl and begin to cut waste into slices.....
then slice at 90 and 45 degrees to the first cuts......
gradually bit by bit work out the waste
I'm leaving this one nice and thick with the bark on to see how it effects the drying and cracking.....
Then start all over again with what was left over from the first bowl......
a few hours later two 24in bowls ready for drying and finishing
once dry driftwood/stone will be added for handles and feet.....
by the way its bloody DANGEROUS if you've never carved with a chainsaw... do your research.... you have been warned...!
